Sooner or later

"Sooner or later", a new film by Jürg Neuenschwander, dwells patiently on dying and grieving; on parents cradling their little boy who died a few hours after his birth; on an old man who gets married shortly before his death; on a teenager who loses his body and then his life; on a young man who rebels against his death; on family members who emerge from the numbness of grief with laughter and crying; on a cemetery gardener who carefully arranges his flowers; on the small peephole through which one can see the furnace in the crematorium; on the gravediggers by an open tomb, shoveling dirt on the coffin. "Sooner or later" captures ordinary acts, which in the face of death become a ritual, and gives space to the subtle, nearly invisible gestures and movements which make suffering and uncertainty more bearable: caressing a cat, a handshake, or a fleeting glance. It focuses on images and moments of death and grief, which we avoid in everyday life because we are insecure, afraid, and ashamed. "Sooner or later" does not dwell on the hope for eternal life, but searches for the nearly invisible stops on the path of dying and through the grieving process. It is a film about confronting and examining one’s own mortality. "Sooner or later" addresses the universal nature of the only sure thing in life. Whether in the Emmental or in Tibet, whether at home or in a hospital, the final farewell to people and to life is a difficult and painful experience. The temporary nature of our existence is a fact of life everywhere.
